Codfish Island/Whenua Hou is a small island located to the west of Stewart Island. The Southland branch of Tansley Electrical worked with the Department of Conservation (DOC) to install a solar panel electrical system
The Island is a predator-free island, home to New Zealand’s critically endangered parrot, the kākāpō. The Island is only visited by scientific researchers and DOC-authorised personal, the sole hut needed an electricity solution that was reliable, long-lasting and able to not only power the property, but also incubate eggs and help keep chicks warm.
A remote area to access, the hut is located at Sealer’s Bay and only reached by light aircraft or helicopter. Tansley Electrical was able to provide a solar solution that was durable and powers a battery bank, allowing the scientist and researchers to power up incubators, lighting and scientific equipment. Even in the event of a tree falling on the roof or extreme weather conditions, the solar laminate should withstand whatever the region might throw at it.
